1/4-inch Minus Sand:
We have three 1/4-inch minus products: 1/4-inch minus sand, 1/4-inch rescreened rock, and 1/8-inch minus sand. All three of these products have our signature reddish-tan color. Quite possibly one of the best kept secrets in the pit are our 1/4-inch minus products. The least expensive products sold in the pit, they can be formulated for a variety of uses including fill under buildings, horse arenas, ballfields, roadway construction, base for pavers, and landscaping.

1/8-inch minus sand - The 1/8-inch minus sand consists of the portion of sand that passes through an 1/8-inch screen when the 1/4-inch sand is rescreened. It consists of sand that is finer than 1/8-inch and is the finest sand manufactured at the pit. It is a popular choice for ballfields and arenas. The lack of rock greater in size than 1/8-inch makes the sand smoother which is especially nice in ballfields because there is less risk of injury when a player slides on the fine sand. Our 1/8-inch minus sand has also been used to prepare topsoil mixes by some of our customers.
1/4-inch rescreen - Our 1/4-inch rescreen is made in 2 ways. Part of our 1/4-inch rescreen comes off our main crushing operation and consists of material that doesn’t pass through the primary 1/4-inch screen. As such, it consists of a higher percentage of rock closer to 1/4-inch in size and a smaller percentage of fines. Our other 1/4-inch rescreen product is made from our 1/4-inch sand. We pass it across a 1/8-inch screen which results in material primarily between 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch being retained in the 1/4-inch product. Due to the fact that the materials are screened and not washed, both rescreen products still contain some fines. However, they are coarser than our 1/4-inch sand. Due to the limited amount of fines in our 1/4-inch rescreen it is not recommended in areas where tighter compaction is desired. Our 1/4-inch rescreen is a popular choice for landscaped areas where small, looser rock is desired, pathways, and other applications where relatively fine rock is required. Another popular use of this product has been as a rooting medium for plant nurseries.
1/4-inch minus sand - Our 1/4-inch minus sand consists of materials smaller than 1/4-inch. It is well graded (which means it has a large variation of material sizes). Due to its well graded nature it compacts very tightly. Our customers use 1/4-inch minus sand for a number of applications including fill under houses and buildings, road construction, horse arenas, base for pavers, landscaping, and other areas where structural fill is required. Depending on where we are mining in our pit and which side of the pile we load from, we do see some variation in our 1/4-inch minus sand. If you can let us know what you are using the sand for ahead of time, we can often load it in such a way that we can better meet your needs. For example, the sand that includes a higher percentage finer material will compact tighter and would be superior for compacted fill areas. Conversely, for road surfaces and landscaped areas more rock might be desired and a slightly coarser sand would be preferred. |
