Located in the Unaweep Canyon, the Moores Pit was first developed in the 1960's to provide road base and asphalt material to construct Highway 141. Over the next 30 years the Colorado Department of Transportation used material sourced from the pit to maintain Highway 141. In the 1990's Leon and Craig Moores purchased a small crushing unit and began processing a number of products for commercial sale. What began as a small part time operation to supplement the cattle ranch, has now grown into a full time commercial pit supplying over 15 different products.

The Moores Pit is unique because the material is much different than the material found in pits in the Grand Valley and elsewhere in the region. The signature reddish-tan color of the gravel products from the Moores Pit stand in stark contrast to other products available. The color and high quality of the products from the Moores Pit make it a favorite for contractors, landscapers, homeowners, and developers.

The Moores Pit contains a huge variation of material sizes with some boulders in the pit larger than a minivan. This large variation in material sizes allows for a wide range of product offerings which include everything from 6-foot- plus sized boulders all the way down to 1/8-inch minus sand. The high density and semi angularity of the boulders make them a favorite for riprap, rock walls, and landscaping. The color and quality of the screened rock products make them very attractive to landscapers and hundreds of projects have been completed by landscapers using this rock throughout the region. The high percentage of natural granite rock in the 1/4" to 1/2" size range allow for the production of a decomposed granite mix that is popular for paving trails, parking areas, and other areas where a natural look is desired.

The large variation of material sizes also allow for production of premier roadbase. Sometimes called poor man's cement, the large variation of material sizes allows for a tightly compacted roadbase that holds up well to traffic and can be found in driveways and county roads throughout the area. Quite possibly one of the best kept secrets in the pit is the 1/4-inch minus sand. The least expensive product sold in the pit, it is well graded which allows excellent compaction. It is often used for fill under buildings, horse arenas, ballfields, base under roadways, base for pavers, and for landscaping such as the medians in the Riverside Parkway and North Avenue in Grand Junction.
