Boulders:

Our pit is unique in that we have a large variation in sizes and types of rock. Among our larger rock you will find multiple colors and types of rock. Our granite rocks come in several different colors including pink, grey, black, and a mix of many colors. We have two types of sandstone rock, one is softer and yellowish red and the other is a darker red metamorphized sandstone/quartzite that is harder and much more durable. The variety of rock colors and sizes available in the pit means that we can provide rock for almost any project from construction of rock walls and landscape boulders to riprap.

One thing to consider about rock is that it gets really heavy really fast and while we can load just about anything we find at the pit, our customers need to have the ability to handle the rock when it reaches the construction site. As an example, a typical rock will weigh somewhere in the range of 166 pounds per cubic foot. The table below gives you some sense of what you can expect:

Products:
6-inch- 2-foot boulders - In this size range and smaller you will find that about half or more of the rocks are sandstone/quartzite, although this can vary depending on where we are mining in the pit and how we sort the rocks. As our rocks get smaller they tend to be more angular, so this size is particularly popular for riprap applications. We also see our customers using this rock for walls because they stack well. Because these rocks are much easier to handle they are also very popular for landscaping. With adequate lead time we can sort our rocks by size (within reason) to better fit our customer’s needs. Let us know what your project requirements are and we will do our best to accommodate you.

2-4- foot boulders - The rocks in this range are a bit easier to handle than larger sizes and are very popular with our customers for construction of rock walls, riprap, and landscaping applications. You will find a much higher percentage of our signature red sandstone/quartzite rocks in this size range than the larger sizes although there are still a lot of granitic boulders.

4-6- foot boulders - Our 4 to 6 foot boulders are a mix of granitic rocks and sandstone/quartzite rocks. However, the bulk of the rock in this range is granitic. Our wide variety of rock sizes, shapes, and colors in this size make them popular for construction of rock walls, riprap, and landscaping. They also work well as bollards to protect buildings, landscaping, trees, or other infrastructure.

6 to 10 foot boulder - We find quite a few boulders ranging in size from 6 to 10 feet in the pit. Typically these boulders are more granitic although on some rare occasions we find some sandstone/quartzite boulders of this size. If you are interested in larger rocks, feel free to call or visit and we will be happy to show you what we have. On occasion we do get rocks bigger than 10 feet but they prove problematic for our customers to haul, so we often break them up. If you want a big one and have the facilities to handle it, we do have a few sitting at strategic locations around the pit that serve as berms. They are all for sale. Or if you have some time, let us know and when we encounter one we can save it for you. In addition to riprap applications, our larger rocks are popular among our customers as sitter rocks for landscaping, construction of rock walls, or anywhere you want your landscaping to “make a statement.”
